What do you have to do to have healthy hair?

I'm on the process of trying to keep my hair healthy and let it grow. I always braid my hair for the reason that I've heard it makes your hair grow. Is that true? Also, how often must I wash it. Usually I wash it every other day. Can you just throw a bunch of hair tips for me. Thanks. What do you have to do to have healthy hair?
well, braiding it wont help it grow. if you want healthy hair, never use heat styling, never dye it or any other chemical application such as perms, use mild shampoo every other day and let your hair air dry. do not brush your hair in a rough manner; start from the tips working your way up to the roots. your hair will grow at its own pace. What do you have to do to have healthy hair?
I'm on the same quest, though I'm a hypocrite and don't follow all of my own rules.

-Deep condition weekly or biweekly.

-Cut down on the amount of shampoo you use (I've stopped using it, and I'm now conditioner-washing)

-Use conditioner daily.

-Try not to use hair ties (if you must, use thick scrunchies)

-Cut back on straightening, curling, blow drying, etc

-Stop dying

-Get a trim every 4 to six months

-Take prenatal vitamins.

The prenatal vitamins make your hair grow extremely fast.
Your diet - As with just about anything what you put into your body, has a lot to do with how your hair grows. You should eat a healthy diet and avoid smoking, excessive drinking, sugar foods, to much caffeine, fatty fried foods, etc. Anything you know is bad for your health is also bad for your hair!

Sleep - You need to get a good amount of sleep for your health and your hair. Your body needs to have sleep to function properly and this includes growing your hair.

Heat - Try to avoid heat appliances as you grow your hair out. With all the appliances we use on our hair it takes a toll! Even when we use heat protection products, it is inevitable our hair will become damaged. The best thing to do is allow your hair to air dry rather then blow dry as often as possible. If you just have to use a flatiron or blow dryer try using it on the lowest setting it has.

Deep conditioning treatments - Do a weekly deep conditioning treatment on your hair to protect your hair shaft.

Avoid excessive brushing - When you brush your hair to much it actually tears and breaks your hair. So Marsha Brady was wrong! Especially when your air is wet it is more likely to be damaged since it is more vulnerable. You should be gentle when brushing your hair all the time and when it is wet use a wide toothed comb instead of a brush.

Trim your hair - You may thing this defeats the purpose of growing your hair out but it actually helps to keep your hair in better condition. About every eight to ten weeks get a little trim to help remove damaged ends.

Weekly scalp massage - You should give yourself, or better yet have your partner massage your scalp once a week. It feels great and it also stimulates your hairs follicles.

Invest in good brushes and combs - You should carefully choose the brush or comb that you use. Avoid plastic brushes as they are typically not good for your hair. Depending on your specific hair type you should choose one special for it. There are many different types of brushes and combs all which help you create a different hair style. Just look for good quality ones that will not damage your hair.

- Vitamins that help your hair grow -

Biotin - Brewer's yeast, whole grains, egg yolks, liver, rice and milk. Daily dose should be between 150-300 mcg.

Vitamin B - Green vegetables, beans, sunflower seeds, nuts and peas.

Vitamin B12 - Chicken, fish, eggs and milk. Daily dose should be 2 mg.

Vitamin C - Citrus fruits such as oranges, lemons, limes, melons and berries of all sorts, pineapple, tomatoes, green peppers, potatoes. Daily dose should be 60 mg.

Vitamin E - Avocados, rice bran, nuts, wheat germ oi, dark green vegetables, legumes and whole grains. Daily dose should 400 IU. However those with high blood pressure should ask your doctor first since many of these foods raise your blood pressure.

Vitamin A - Carrots, sweet potatoes, apricots, peaches, fish liver oil, meat, milk, spinach, squash, broccoli, cantaloupe and eggs.Daily dosage should be 5,000 IU.

Vitamin K - Seafood, broccoli, lettuce, brussel sprouts, cabbage, dark green leafy vegetables, oatmeal, soybeans, wheat, yogurt, dairy, figs, asparagus, egg yolks and liver.

You can also take vitamins to help your hair grow faster. However the average persons hair only grows out six inches in a year. So don't expect your hair to grow long over night. If you want long hair now you may consider hair extensions.
